10 - Wrap Up

Wow . . . where do I start . . . so many wonderful resources . . . I'd have to say that finding that my brother wasn't the II (second) was the biggest for me . . . although I've already directed patrons to various databases already . . . esp. NetLibrary . . .

Thanks for all the work on your end and encouragement . . .

9 - Genealogy Resources & Sanborn Maps

These are very interesting . . .and shocking . . I found out that my Grandfather's middle name isn't/wasn't Paul and therefore my brother isn't a II (second) . . I'll have to check the headstone when I visit the cemetery next week . . . It was interesting to see what information there was and wasn't . . I found myself and not my brothers . . I found my dad and possibly my Great Grandfather . . I thought there might be a picture of my great-grandfather as he was the first fire chief in Sioux Falls . . . no such luck . . but that is the way of genealogy research . . . having a lot of patience and looking everywhere . . . with the Sanborn maps I looked at Parker and Hartford . . . Hartford didn't have much for the time frame I was looking for . . . my Grandmother said her father wouldn't let her stay for the whole play that she was in at school because he felt it was a fire trap . . . and sure enough it did catch fire a few weeks after the play . . .I can see how these could help one find family history information . .

8 - Learning Express

I've often referred patrons to this resource but it was good to try it out myself and helps me know where to look on pages to find things and how they appear . . . . I had a bit of a time finding the ebooks until one of my co-workers said I had to return to the home page of Learning Express . . . it is good to know the ebooks are there to support the exams . . . the answers also were very thorough and helpful on the test I took . . .(I actually tried two .. .)

7 - ArchiveGrid and CAMIO

It's taken me a long time to complete this lesson as I had many interruptions, etc. that stopped me mid-lesson . . . as I'm sure many have . . but I did find in the ArchiveGrid interesting information . . I hadn't realized that Sitting Bull had gone to Canada for sometime . . . and I found several citations of books and other materials under family last names . . this could be very usefull for tose doing geneology . . . As for CAMIO . . . I was a bit frustrated as the artists I was searching for were often not found and so I finally went with old standards Picasso, etc . . . I did create a list of favorites and played around with them . . . how fun to be able to order the slides and be able to utilize them. . .

6 - WorldCat and FirstSearch

Poof . . . I'm glad I've worked in a library for some time and understand bib. records, etc. . . this resource would be great for those doing research. They could find obscure articles.books, etc. on specific topics. The OAIster results were interesting. I found an article about hardwood tree decline following carivore loss in the Great Plains . . . who knew ??!!! . . . The details of the article makes it easy to ILL if needed . . This is a mind boggling resource . . .

5 Netlibrary

Wow!!! What a resource . . . I almost got lost in this one for all the wonderful information it provides . . . I've often helped patrons get an account and referred them to this database but I've made my own account and bookmarked a few favorite books I'll have to read . . . (I've yet to make notes) . . . and in doing so I've discovered how to turn pages (which doesn't happen from the bottom of the page where there are forward and back buttons . . but rather from the top of the page) . . it seem trial and error are my best teachers . . . There were some very interesting exercise books that offered ideas for those of us who are aging, etc. . . and putting Nebraska into the publisher field brought up many great books . . . WOW

4 Gales Virtual Reference

What an amazing list of resources .. I looked up National Survey of State Laws . . . .real estate law and adverse possession . . .it was very thorough and informative . . . . Then I did a basic search for foods with zinc in them and was not very successful . . .although I learned a lot about zinc and it's effects on the body and the lack of zinc or zinc deficiencies . . .

3 - Proquest

It seems to be a very indepth resource for finding magazine articles in most fields. I found some very fascinating ones on book binding. In searching for publications on interior design, or graphic design very few were found but on nursing there were extensive lists of journals. A good resource to know about.

2 SIRS Discoverer

I got a chance to play around with Discoverer today and found good information on Shaun White with a general search and found nothing under biography. The country information was very fascinating expecially with timelines, etc. which can give a great background on historical events influencing current day countries. The activities provided were very interesting and diverse. On some lists one has to wade through many articles and perhaps read them to find out if there is information on the subject or words you are looking for, which is something we're used to but the public likes it all cut and dried for them and may need help in narrowing searches, etc.

2 SIRS

I was able to explore SIRS Researcher (Discoverer was down) and explored vegetarianism. It was an excellent resource for current and articles as far back as the 90's on this topic. The time line and global impact also produced interesting data and in some areas sparse results as may be expected. I also explored Art - symbolism . . which was way too narrow although interesting in the little it had . . .I will explore SIRS Discoverer tomorrow granting it is up then. . . and for now onward . . .

1 a-c

Upon further exploration I discovered many other things that students and patrons will enjoy . . like the outline maps and flags, the games for young children to practice math, and thinking skills, interactive maps, etc. . . . the foreign language section is also interesting although not a flushed out and doesn't have a read to me capability that would make it an added attraction for those learning French or Spanish . . one could get lost in all the functions but I discovered more learning options than I had before . .

Although I spent several years in Australia I never encountered a platapus and therefor thought to look up more on it . . the World Book Kids did a nice job of it with a picture, etc. . . this is the only mammal to lay eggs . . . 1-3 leathery eggs . . .

In exploring countries I looked at Patagonia and discovered a lot and found the magazine articles very useful with color photos, etc. that would be of great use to patrons.

The Discover part I found a bit limiting but good for those who might have reading challenges. The descriptions are well done.

I was looking for a few more items but didn't get far and it might be because it was too specialized. . .
